1972 Dnepr 14

Almost a decade later after the К-650 production in the mid-seventies Kiev plant began manufacturing of special escort motorbikes Dnepr-14, created by the design bureau of the enterprise hand in hand with All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Motor Industry in Serpukhov. The bike Dnepr MT-10, produced commercially at that time was used as a basis. The general outline of the design was preserved, though the vehicle got another engine of 649 cm3 capacity especially developed for it. The transmission and rear suspension underwent rebuilding as well; the motorcycle received additional safety rails. The exterior of the vehicle was altered too. The driver’s saddle was single-seat as it was with its predecessor.

Already not separate, but all cycles of the late model were equipped with radio stations along with sound and light custom signal. The construction of the fly-screen also changed. Generally, the fly-screen became an object of the designers’ focused attention for a long time. The peak speed of the motorcycles grew achieving 160 km/h. At such movement speeds strong air drags arose and as consequence aerodynamic forces and moments grew, which made the bike’s handling worse. No small problem was the rain and dirt spatters protection of the motor-cyclist. In principle an optimal design variant of the screen has not been found till nowadays, for which reason the experiments with the shape and sizes of this vital part continue.

The Dnepr-14 became a main modification of the escort motorbike, served till the early 90-ies, naturally undergoing upgrading. Thus in the eighties the version Dnepr-14.9 and later the Dnepr-14.9M appeared, significantly differing from the initial version of the bike.
