In July of 1941 American Army Armament Command held competitive tender for creation of an improved model of the light army all-wheel drive vehicle. The production of the Willys MB model (Military, model В), began in November, 1941. Before its manufacturing started the Ford obtained the license for the Willys MB production, which is known as the Ford GPW. The first 25,000 Willys MB had a grill welded from steel plates. Since March, 1942 a new version with a pressed grill came into being. A total of about 360,000 Willys MB and 277,000 Ford GPW were made. The vehicles were mass delivered to the allies of anti-Hitler coalition. A bit more than 50,000 Willys MB and Ford GPW arrived in the USSR under the lend-lease program.
