1943 88-mm (25-pound) Gun – Howitzer Mk.IV (the United Kingdom)

In the late 30s War Ministry of Great Britain ordered a gun – howitzer which substituted for three outmoded weapons at once. In 1939 a new gun – howitzer passed into service under the identification mark of Ordnance QF 25 pounder. 25 pounds in the identification meant a shell’s weight. The first samples (QF 25-pdr Mk.l) were made on the carriage of the 18-pound cannon. The major modification version became the QF 25-pdr Mk.ll which received a completely new gun mount. A special swivel block was fixed below the gun mount and when the gun-howitzer was set on this block it got a circular field of fire. Since 1943 the gun QF 25-pdr Mk.IV went into production which had a muzzle break. The QF 25-pdr cannons were the main guns of this class in English Army and the Commonwealth countries during World War II.
