In 1938 the GAZ AA was substituted with more advanced GAZ MM lorry. The radical departure from the predecessor became its engine of 50 hp capacity moreover the suspension was strengthened and the steering and the propeller shaft were changed. The loading capacity remained at the previous level — 1.5 ton. By the beginning of the Great Patriotic War that vehicle had been the major lorry produced at the GAZ plant. Since September 1942 the manufacture of a simplified version started: the front fenders became simplistic, the backboard became dropped and there was only one headlamp left. During the hardest time the GAZ MM-V was produced with a simplified cab, the door and the top of which were made of canvas cloth. A total of 66,300 pieces of the GAZ MM were built during the war years.
