In the middle of 1990s GT cars got much more important role. Porsche rose to the fly and developed GT1 on the base of the 911 using prospective high-technology racing conceptions. The sixty-fourth race in Le Mans in 1996 was its racing debut. The new Porsche sporting car was with mid-engine, which added to a balanced axle load and aerodynamic advantages distribution.
Moreover, a new transition from air to water took place for cooling 3.2-liter turbo engine to improve a heat load and fuel consumption. The typical peculiarities of this modern high production engine include double over head camshafts per a cylinder and four valves per a combustion chamber. The debut was a success. Two new Porsche 911 GT1 showed reliability and speed, and turned out to be second and third. Two years later in 1998 the victory was won: in spite of fierce competition of the teams Mercedes, BMW, Nissan, Toyota, Chrysler, Porsche 911 GT1 managed to bear the most famous double palm and the quantity of Porsche’s victories in the classic 24-hour races grew to 16.
