In the wake of the energy crisis in the mid-1970s Volkswagen calls off a joint project for a new sports car. Porsche decides to carry on and design the 924 as its own entry-level model for its product line. Even the earliest version of this model features the very distinctive, large hatchback window. Starting in 1976 the 924 with a water-cooled front engine and transaxle design is manufactured in the Audi plant in Neckarsulm, Germany.
