The origins of Ansaldo date back to 1853 when Giovanni Ansaldo, a university teacher from the age of 24, returned to Italy after a stay in North Europe and founded the Company Gio. Ansaldo & C. for the construction of steam trains and ships. The company had the idea of going into car production even before the end of World War I on the conviction that aeroplane production would stop once the war was over and it would then be necessary to convert the war production (heavy artillery) into civil manufacturing. The prototype of the first Ansaldo type 4A was built in 1919 and the first deliveries were made in 1920. The model on display is a world premier (and a production ahead of its time), built in the Ansaldo workshops even before they actually had a department for car production. One of its kind, this model built on a Peugeot frame, has a Peugeot mono-cylinder engine, chain transmission, De Dion bridge and wheels with wooden spokes.
