In 1957, the Monza motor racing circuit played host to the “500 Miglia" - a challenge between the best American and European cars on an oval banked track. The experiment was repeated again in 1958. After withdrawing from racing at the end of the 1957 season, Maserati was now contacted by Eldorado, a leading ice-cream producer, to build a car “to defend the glorious tradition of Italian sport".
Within just a few months, this car made its first appearance and was driven in the competition by British ace Stirling Moss.
