1916 Elephant steam locomotive C 5/6 No. 2965

The last big Swiss steam locomotive C 5/6 No. 2965 Elephant – a power plant on wheels. It hauled its own essential energy source such as coal briquets in the tender as well as water with which to convert the heat generated into motion. In 1913, the largest steam locomotive ever built for Swiss railways entered service. Up to then, the private Gotthard Railway had been obliged to use two or three locomotives per train to handle the rising freight and passenger traffic volumes on the mountain line. It was only possible to use larger and more powerful locomotives after the Gotthard Railway had been nationalised in 1909 and Swiss Federal Railways changed the operating conditions. They had larger diameter turntables built. 30 of these locomotives were built by SLM before the decision to electrify the line was taken in 1916. The early electrification of Swiss railways meant that no more larger steam locomotives were ordered.
