A universal locomotive for secondary lines Steam tank locomotive Ed 3/3 No 3 Langnau Emmental Railway EB 1881 The design of driving and valve rods so they would not bend was a challenging task for the engineers. The director of SLM, Charles Brown, designed a new valve gear for the series of universal locomotives, which was mounted directly under the driver’s cab. This requires the prominent long rods to the cylinders. Brown’s system, however, had a tendency to cause vibrations, for which reason it was abandoned. SLM 30.6 t 206 kW 2 cylinders saturated steam 12 bar 50 km/h restored by CFF VHS in operation 1881-1933
