The director of SLM, Charles Brown, designed a new valve gear for the series of universal locomotives, which was mounted directly under the driver’s cab. This requires the prominent long rods to the cylinders. Brown’s system, however, had a tendency to cause vibrations, for which reason it was abandoned.
