Citroën DS (is pronounced de-es; in French it sounds as the word “Déesse” — goddess) is a French automobile.
The car’s presentation took place in April 1955 года at the Paris Motor Show, where its futuristic design really shocked. In the first 15 minutes of the show, 800orders were taken and for the first day totaled about 12,000, and for the first week — about 80,000. The DS got world fame in the result of the attempt on the President De Gaulle in 1962 году: in spite of a big number of bullet hits, the car did not diverge from the road and could go away from the shooting.
The car’s design was revolutionary and unusual for its time. The DS was a creation of the legendary designer Flaminio Bertoni. The two-box body of the DS had a very low fit, a huge glass area, a large front overhang and a very little rear overhang, a smooth well-rounded tail, covering wheels. The swiftness of the whole car’s structure was emphasized by thin, elegant piles of the roof, distinctive body aerodynamics and perfect wedding of right and bent lines. An unusual onespoke wheel attracted attention particularly in the interior.
The Citroën DS possessed a large vatiety of technological innovations:a hydrineumatic suspension, which not only provided ride comfort, but made possible to lift and lower down the car body, disk brakes, hydraulic power steering and brakes, an automatic clutch and a hydraulic control system of the gearbox actuator.
The car had an all-time low coefficient of the dynamic resistance for its time: Cx = 0,34-0,38. The swiveling head lamps were introduced in the modification of 1968.
All together about 1 million 330,000 pieces of this model were produced for 20 years.
