GAZ-66 is a Soviet and Russian truck with the chassis type 4×4, the payload 2,0 ton and the cabin above the engine. It is the most production all-wheel two-axle truck in the Soviet Army and national economy of the USSR and Russia in 1960—1990.
The serial production of the GAZ-66 was developed since July 1964. In 1968 the truck got a centralized control system of tire pressure (66-01 and its versions). In1966 it was honored with the Gold medal at the exhibition “Modern Agricultural Technical Equipment” in Moscow. In 1967 it was honored the Golden medal at the international fair of agricultural technical equipment in Leipzig. The GAZ-66 was exported to all countries of the socialist camp.
In 1995 the mass production of the GAZ-66-11 with its versions was stopped. Instead Gorky automobile plant mastered manufacturing of the model GAZ-3308 “Sadko”. The last copy of the GAZ ГАЗ-66-40 rolled out of the assembly line on the 1st of July in 1999. There were 965,941 automobiles of the series GAZ-66 totally produced.
GAZ-66 is an off-highway vehicle. A high flotation of the truck is conditioned by use of self-locking differential of the front and back axles, a big ride height and regulated pressure in tires. An engine-driven compressor is fixed for inflation of the tires. The operation brake system is split-hydraulic with vacuum servo. The parking brake system is a drum transmission brake. There is hydraulic servo steering.
